Rockler Top 2

So what is a NORDY you might ask?  I asked myself the same thing when I opened my email with the announcement from Rockler Woodworking... Here's what the email from Rockler said:

"We are proud to announce the winners of the first annual NORDYS Video Contest. Instead of just one "Best Picture" award, NORDY winners were selected in two categories: The Academy Choice, determined by a panel of Rockler judges, and The People's Choice, a tally of the most votes received on the NORDYS Video Contest Facebook page."

I have to say that it piqued my interest, so I clicked on the link in the email to see what all the NORDY fuss was all about and here's what I found out:

The NORDY's are the Rockler's very own "woodworking version of the Oscars".   And they are named after Rockler founder, Nordy Rockler.   Now it makes perfect sense!  Rocker ran a contest from January 8th to February 22nd of this year and they asked woodworkers to create a short video (around two minutes) explaining why they were woodworkers.  Dozens of videos were submitted, and from those winners were selected.  You can see all the winners (both the Academy's Choice and the People's Choice) on Rockler's website.  I have to say there are some very creative submissions. I was impressed with both the creativity and the video production quality.  There were some good shots of some tools cutting through wood!  Just as an aside... Drill presses always make impressive sawdust in video shots.  And who doesn't love to see a router bit easing along the edge of a board, especially when shot looking up from underneath?

Here's a little info taken straight from the Rockler Website about the winners and what they won for their fantastic works of art:

The 2013 Academy Choice winner is "Stumpy Nubs," claiming the $500 Rockler Gift Card top prize for his woodworking music video titled "Rappin' Roy". Laney Shaughnessy took top honors in the People's Choice and a $250 Rockler Gift Card prize for his "Community of Woodworkers" video.

Hopefully Rockler will make this a yearly event!  It was fun to watch and who doesn't want a chance to win a $500 gift card just for doing what you love?
