DeWalt Radar Scanner - DCT418 Preview

It's a tough job, but someone has to do it, right? We got a first-hand look at some of DeWalt's newest tools and accessories during their Media Tool Preview. The DeWalt Radar Scanner model DCT418 is a hand held miracle. OK, maybe miracle isn't the right word, but it definitely caught my eye for several reasons, not the least of which was the price (estimated to be $299).

This tool is handy for a number of trades and will scan up to 3 inches deep through these materials:

  • Drywall
  • Concrete
  • Marble
  • Ceramic Tile
  • Wood/Plywood

The display is bright and clear and alerts you to the presence of just about everything from PVC pipe to electrical wiring, using not only icons but illustrations of the object. When I first saw it, I actually thought it was an image of the actual object behind the wall, but they are stock images, stored inside the tool. That speaks either to my naievete, or the realistic images on the tool - take your pick.

12V MAX Battery

Since the DCT418 runs on DeWalt's 12V MAX battery system, it will integrate with the entire lineup and likely receive big support from the Yellow Fan base that exists. I can say this definitively - the tool seems simple to use and was completely accurate on each pass of the wall during the demonstration.

Here's the video we shot at DeWalt's testing grounds. Take a look and see the DCT418 in action.
